Arts and Culture at SCS
Sumiton Christian School offers a wonderful fine arts program for our elementary children. Art, choir, band, and theatre/performing arts are available for all K-5 students. These classes are taught by certified teachers who are eminently qualified though extensive backgrounds and training in their chosen fields.
Daily art classes feature instruction using a variety of media from charcoal to clay, printmaking, painting, and sculpture. Elements of art, and principles of art are emphasized. Student artwork is featured in the annual SCS Elementary Art Show.
The 6th - 12th grade Fine Arts Program is provided to allow students to explore and expand their knowledge and abilities in each particular discipline. Art students in grades 6 - 12 have their artwork featured in the annual SCS High School Art Show. Winners from our local competition move on to compete in the Regional Art Show. A total of 12 Alabama Independent Schools compete in the Regional Show. Winners move on to the State Art Competition. Many of the SCS art students have made it to the State Competition with several earning first place honors. Selected artwork from the local competition may also be featured at the Congressional Competition.
Several of our graduates have chosen to pursue careers in Commercial Graphic Art, Interior Design, and Musical Performance.
 Band students in grades 7 - 12 are encouraged to audition for the Vanguard Marching Band. The marching band performs at halftime shows throughout the football season. Instrumental auditions and Color Guard auditions are held prior to the next marching season. Individual instruction is available to all band students. Along with the marching band, concert bands and ensembles give students the opportunity to showcase their musical talents.
Elementary and high school choirs perform each year for the entire school
family. Performances are also scheduled for awards day and graduation ceremonies. Selected high school choir members are invited to compete in the State Choir Competition held each year. This year, our SCS Competition Choir earned all "superiors" at the State Competition.
Drama classes train students in performing arts. Plays, skits and full-scale theatrical performances are the highlight of this training. Students take part in acting roles, set design and lighting, and set building and assembly. Summer drama workshops are held each year to prepare student actors for summer performances. Elementary, junior high and high school drama classes perform plays each year for the students and parents. Recent productions included "Cinderella", "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat", and "Selections from Charlie Brown",
